How do you read this?
Why this spelling
This romanisation is not the spelling copied letter by letter. It is built from the National Institute of Korean Language’s Revised Romanization, which writes what the word sounds like once the sounds next to each other have changed it.
When you would say it
Point at the word. You’ll get the sound back, slowly, and usually twice.
Practice: five things on a menu
A menu is where this starts paying for itself, because dish names are built out of parts and the parts repeat. Read the last square first if you’re in a hurry — it usually tells you what kind of thing you’re about to eat.
