저기요

jeogiyo

Excuse me.

Why this spelling

This romanisation is not the spelling copied letter by letter. It is built from the National Institute of Korean Language’s Revised Romanization, which writes what the word sounds like once the sounds next to each other have changed it.

When you would say it

The single most useful word in a Korean restaurant. It orders food, gets you water, calls for the check, asks for anything at all.

How to flag down a server

No one is going to swing by your table to check on you. That’s not neglect — the assumption is that you’ll call when you need something, and until you do, you’re left in peace. Travelers used to servers circling the room read this as being ignored and sit there waiting.

Card number 24 of the book

The guidebook prints these as numbered cards, so you can hold up a number instead of trying to pronounce it. The Korean edition comes with it and has the same numbers in the same places.
