Why this spelling

This romanisation is not the spelling copied letter by letter. It is built from the National Institute of Korean Language’s Revised Romanization, which writes what the word sounds like once the sounds next to each other have changed it.

When you would say it

Say it at the desk if the panel won’t behave. Someone will come up and press the right thing.

Reading the controller on the wall

One panel on the wall runs the heat, and in many rooms the hot water too. It sits by the bathroom door or in the entryway, the labels are in Korean, and it is the thing most likely to leave you lying awake on a floor you can’t touch. Six words cover almost every panel you’ll meet.
