Why this spelling

This romanisation is not the spelling copied letter by letter. It is built from the National Institute of Korean Language’s Revised Romanization, which writes what the word sounds like once the sounds next to each other have changed it.

When you would say it

Ask before you take the key, not after you open the door.

The floor is the heater

Korean buildings heat from the floor up. Hot water runs through pipes under the surface you’re standing on, and the floor itself becomes the radiator. The system is called 온돌. It’s why there’s no radiator on the wall, and why the room can feel warm at your feet and cool at your head.
