Why this spelling
This romanisation is not the spelling copied letter by letter. It is built from the National Institute of Korean Language’s Revised Romanization, which writes what the word sounds like once the sounds next to each other have changed it.
When you would say it
Swap 소주 for 맥주 and you have ordered beer instead.
What is in the glass
Soju is sold in a green bottle of a size everyone recognizes, and it is drunk from a small glass, never a large one. That glass size is doing a job: it makes pouring for each other frequent, and pouring for each other is the social part.
